This Week at the Market

There will be lots of holiday goodness at the Brighton Winter Farmers’ Market this Sunday.  Make someone really happy with a Brighton Farmers’ Market Gift Certificate, available in any amount (in $5 increments), which the recipient can exchange for tokens to spend at the market. Some market customers bought certificates as a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift for new neighbors — a thoughtful gift and one that helps support local farmers too.

Lakestone Family Farm returns to the market this week with Hakurei turnips, mixed young kale, Swiss chard, hon tsai tai, spinach, pac choi, and whole chickens, all certified organic. Fellenz Family Farm will have apples (Suncrisp, Splendour, Ida Red, Gold Rush, and Braeburn); potatoes (Keuka Gold, Red Maria, and French Fingerling); lettuce baskets with a mix of Cherokee, Tropicana, romaine, and Panisse butterhead; Kossak kohlrabi, rutabaga, Asian stir-fry  mix (includes Hakurei turnips, komatsuna, and tat soi); scallions; garlic; shallots; and red onions, all certified organic; blemished apples and potatoes will be available in bulk quantities.

Fisher Hill Farm is bringing potatoes, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, celeriac, cabbage, beets, onions, shallots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, garlic, fennel, kale, Sheridan grapes, colorful Asian greens mix, pac choi, frozen chicken (organically fed and conventional), frozen corn, frozen strawberries, and frozen rhubarb; Phil will also take orders for fresh turkey for Christmas — order early because supply is limited. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring pasture-raised, organically fed pork chops — sirloin, rib, and loin.

K&S Bischoping will have apples — Cortland, Jonagold, Crispin, Idareds, and some heirlooms. Growing Family Farm is bringing shiitake and oyster mushrooms, pac choi, Swiss chard, kale, and some items from Small World Food. Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing certified organic 100% grass-fed and finished beef, pasture-raised pork Italian sausage links (the last for a while), and a couple small frozen  heritage turkeys; Della will take orders for farm-raised venison and certified organic pork for later deliveries. Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing freshly-dug sweet carrots, large bunches of kale, green and purple cabbage, red leaf lettuce, garlic, butternut squash, beets, and sweet potatoes.

Nordic Farm will have brown eggs, jams, pickles, granola, and chunky applesauce, made with the farm’s own spray-free apples. Bolton Farms will have hydroponic Boston bibb lettuce, lettuce bouquets, spring mix, kale, buternut squash, parsley, cilantrao, pea shoots, and micro greens. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is offering a new batch of gourmet maple cream spread, glass maple mugs, and gift baskets with maple products. JonJohn’s Bakery will have blueberry-raspberry breakfast cake, sweet potato pie, barbeque pork spare ribs with market vegetables and fresh rolls for dinner. Seaway Trail Honey is bringing hand-crafted natural beeswax ornaments and seasonal varieties of pure honey. Tripleberry Farm will have pesticide-free jams, traditional and reduced sugar and available in gift packs, and goat milk soaps.

Also at the Market

John Wiesenthal‘s beautiful guitar music will provide some holiday cheer. ColorBrightonGreen.org will collect hard-to-recycle items. Brighton Food Cupboard will accept donations of food and cash to help support its mission of providing food to the needy in our community. The need is especially great during the holiday season; a list of items needed can be found here.

Brighton Winter Farmers’ Market is held Sundays, 1 to 4 pm, through April 13, 2014.  It’s located in Brighton’s Brookside Center, 220 Idlewood Road, Rochester. There is a second entrance to the building, easily accessible, from S. Winton, between Westfall and 590 (just south of Westfall).

The Brighton Farmers’ Market is sponsored by the Town of Brighton.  For information on lots of great activities sponsored by the Town’s Recreation Department, see http://www.townofbrighton.org/index.aspx?nid=220.
