Growing Practices
According to Paul and Jan, “Dearhaven Farm is now in its twelfth year of growing fine USDA certified organic produce in ecological harmony with the natural world. We base our practice decisions on an unwavering goal to maintain/improve the soil. Healthy living soil provides the micro-nutrients plants need, including sequestering carbon. The organic matter absorbs water like a sponge, thus preventing run-off erosion and protecting plants during times of drought. We leave no land uncovered, so cover crops and sequential planting keep weed pressure down. Compost and organic mulches, such as straw and leaves, are tucked around crops as they grow. Living pathways are planted with deep-rooting perennials. This provides an undisturbed microbiome to nourish surrounding beds. Low tillage means gently lifting the soil with a fork instead of roto-tilling. Row covers and low tunnels discourage insect damage at vulnerable stages. We use no sprays or chemicals. Regenerative agriculture nourishes and heals our planet as we enjoy the health benefits and pleasure of eating naturally grown food.”
