This Week at the Market – July 2, 2017
We’ll be celebrating our independence from bad food this week at Brighton Farmers’ Market. Please stop by for all you’ll need for a delicious Independence Day picnic, including the early summer crops we’ve been waiting a year to enjoy. Lagoner Farms will have strawberries, sweet cherries, raspberries, and maybe a few of the first blueberries of the season. K&S Bischoping will have the first white currants, red raspberries, and sweet crunchy apples.
Lakestone Family Farm is bringing bushels of peas including sugar snap, shelling, snow, and purple snow; golden, red, and Chioggia beets; red, green, and Tuscan kale; kohlrabi; Swiss chard; garlic scapes; jumbo, large, and medium eggs; and a limited supply of fresh chicken plus frozen cuts. Shady Lane Farm will have green onions, red leaf lettuce, pea shoots, Swiss chard, garlic scapes, fresh-cut herbs, and flower bouquets, large and small.
Andy’s Specialty Garlic is bringing certified organic vine ripe tomatoes, green summer cabbage, fresh garlic, spinach, arugula, lettuce, salad mix, red beets, baby rainbow chard, baby kale, radishes, and turnips. Dearhaven Farm will have certified organic strawberries, juneberries, black currants, sugar snap peas, beets, cabbage, kohlrabi, scallions, head lettuce (romaine, oakleaf, and bibb), large sweet fennel, celery, zucchini, kale, and parsley.
Shannon Brook Farm is featuring certified organic broiler chickens for the grill and recommends this recipe. Bolton Farms is bringing Boston bibb lettuce, lettuce bouquets, spring mix, arugula, curly kale, escarole, and basil.
Tripleberry Farm will have the first of the farm’s pesticide-free raspberries and the last strawberries, plus berry jams and goat milk soaps. Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing lots of steaks from organic 100% grass fed and grass finished beef with a sale on ground beef and broth bones; organic pork from pasture raised pigs raised on a no-corn and no-soy diet; various cuts, sizes and seasonings of organic free-ranging chickens as well as eggs, all soy-free and corn-free; and farmstead soaps, candles, and jams made with organic ingredients from the farm.
Lighthouse Gardens will have organic cherry tomatoes, red and orange sweet peppers, baby Swiss chard, lettuce mix, garlic scapes, fresh garlic, certified organic herb and vegetable plants including early maturing late blight resistant and cherry tomato plants for gardeners getting a late start, succulents in pots and hanging baskets, perennials, flowering hanging baskets, lettuce bowls, herb planters, berry plants, and patio tomato and pepper planters.
Honeybee Happy & Healthy Herbs is bringing shelling peas, fresh basil, catnip, chives, cilantro, dill, flat-leaf parsley, French tarragon, oregano, spearmint, and thyme, along with dried herbs and teas. Growing Family Farms will have certified organic heirloom, grape, cherry, and saladette tomatoes; Asian and slicing cucumbers; eggplant; bell peppers; head lettuce; salad mix; pea shoots; rainbow chard; Italian dandelion; garlic scapes; pasture raised chicken and duck eggs; and Singer Farm Naturals tart cherry juice.
R&M Bischoping will have the last of the farm’s strawberries and the first of the peas, plus honey, honey soaps, and beeswax lip balms and lotion bars. Buzz’s Garden is bringing certified organic celery, red and green leaf lettuce, Boston bibb, spring mix, bok choi, scallions, radishes, salad turnips, kale, Swiss chard, escarole, yellow and purple snow peas, garlic scapes, and dill.
Fellenz Family Farm is bringing certified organic raspberries, radicchio, lettuce, scallions, scapes, summer squash, transplants, beets, kale, and chard, plus Wild Thistle Herbal products. Stonecrop Farm is featuring certified organic fresh turkey parts including legs, wings, boneless breast, and tenders perfect for smoking and grilling, plus certified organic eggs, whole chickens, chicken parts, and cuts of pasture raised heritage pork.
Chicory Blue Gardens will have lovely bouquets of flowers in seasonal colors. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing a fresh batch of maple mustard, new cinnamon maple cream spread (stop by for a tasting), maple cotton candy, pure NYS maple syrup (golden, amber, dark, very dark), maple cream spread, granulated maple sugar, maple garlic rub, maple coffee, maple tea, wheat free oatmeal maple dog treats, soft and hard sugar shapes, and body care products — maple vanilla soap, lotion, and lip balm.
Lavender Moon is offering all natural repellents Bug Off and Tick Me Off for Fourth Festivities, plus herbal culinary blends for the grill, teas, and natural body care products. Seaway Trail Honey is bringing raw, local, seasonal award-winning honeycomb and honey, from spring to fall pure wildflower varieties, harvested from the bees by the shore of Lake Ontario, certified Kosher, and live honey bees for the non-profit NY Bee Wellness educational display.
Pasta Classics is offering ravioli including artichoke and provolone; three cheese; and capicola, pepperjack, and banana pepper; plus cheese and spinach gnocchi and plenty of baked stuffed breads for holiday picnics. Eat Me Ice Cream will have the following in dairy and non-dairy options: lavender dipped bars, tamarind pop rock 4th of July special, strawberry shortcake bars, and a variety of pints — strawberry, tamarind, vanilla, and chocolate.
Le Petit Poutine is offering specials on strawberry soda with strawberries from Lagoner Farms, sausage gravy poutine, and sloppy joe poutine. Flour City Pasta is bringing a large variety of pasta shapes for 4th of July picnics.
Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, panang, veggie, shepherds, and chicken & biscuit pot pies along with seasonal and cream sweet pies, tarts, and galettes. JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing lemonade with strawberries, muffins (blueberry, mixed berry, brownie, and chocolate chip), classic carrot cake, lemon blueberry cake, lemon sour cream cake, chocolate with ganache star cakes, triple decker peanut butter chocolate ganache cake, grandma’s breakfast cake, banana bread, strawberry rhubarb pie, chocolate chip and oatmeal cranberry cookies, chocolate bourbon cake, chocolate peanut butter balls, famous dark chocolate bourbon balls, and individual cakes for holiday picnics.
Brian’s Kitchen is bringing cookies, fudge, and granola bars, with samples. Small World Food will have country multigrain, pain au levain, sourdough rye, and sunflower maple breads (ask about discounted bread baked a day or two prior); and watermelon vinegar — ask for a sample, great in vinaigrette dressings in cocktails, or splashed on grilled salmon.
