October Harvest

This Week at the Market – October 5

October has arrived, and with it the harvest of all the deeply flavorful fall crops. Summer crops are still abundant, thanks to the relatively mild weather so far. Dearhaven Farm is bringing spinach, red raspberries, Romaine and Bibb lettuce, onions, herbs, sweet peppers, eggplant, garlic, shallots, leeks, beets, potatoes, lemongrass, and carrots. Shady Lane Farm is bringing potatoes (red, French fingerlings, and Magic Molly purple), edamame, assorted winter squash, pie pumpkins, sweet potatoes, red and white onions, sweet bell and lunchbox peppers, jalapenos, red mini-cabbage, green beans, decorative mini-pumpkins, garlic, Italian parsley, and colorful bouquets. R&M Bischoping will have tomatillos, hot peppers (Serrano, cayenne and jalapeno), cherry tomatoes, kale, slicing tomatoes, sunflowers and mixed bouquets.

Growing Family Farms will have giant premium shiitakes; heirloom tomatoes; grape tomatoes; eggplant; heirloom squash including New England cheddar butternut, acorn, celebration, buttercup, Hubbard, and pie pumpkins; tomatillos; rainbow chard; Russian kale; free range eggs; and Singer Naturals tart cherry, Concord grape, and organic apple juices. Lighthouse Gardens is bringing certified organic rainbow cherry tomatoes; German White and Italian Purple garlic; sweet onions; purple, ivory, orange and red sweet peppers; baby head lettuce bouquets; Swiss chard; purple beans; baby kale mix; D’Avignon French breakfast and Easter Egg radishes; baby leeks; single serving winter squash; wheatgrass; sunflower and zinnia bouquets; an enormous variety of hardy chrysanthemums in various sizes; herb, vegetable, berry and ornamental transplants; summer blooming perennials; and organic potting soil.

Noto Fruit Farm is bringing Macoun, Macintosh, Cortland, Empire, Gala, Daybreak Fuji, Honey Crisp, and Matsu/Crispin apples, and freshly pressed apple cider. Buzz’s Garden will have Siberian and Tuscan Kale, lettuce bouquets, micro Asian greens, Osaka purple mustard greens, Hakurei sweet salad turnips, French breakfast radishes, red beets, red and orange carrots, sweet peppers, Asian eggplant, purple string beans, cherry tomatoes, and pea shoots. Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing kale, spinach, carrots, red and golden beets, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, spaghetti and butternut squashes, pie pumpkins, green and purple cabbage, garlic, arugula, green beans, and zucchini.

Ann’s Purple Produce will have freshly picked Concord grapes, bittersweet bunches, purple potatoes, ground cherries, white cucumbers, purple peppers, eggplant, Bright Lights Swiss chard, baby summer squash, red chesnok garlic, freshly cut herbs (parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme and spearmint), bouquets of all sizes, dahlias, purple statice for drying, lavender and eucalyptus bunches, potted herbs, shade and sun perennials, sunflower heads for the birds or for seed eating and decorative fall amaranth. Lakestone Family Farm is bringing white and gold beets; spinach; rainbow Swiss chard; lacinato, curly and red Russian kale; mustard greens; lettuce bouquets; field greens; arugula; leaf lettuce; zucchini; five varieties of eggplant; lunchbox peppers; sweet red peppers; several varieties of hot peppers; basil; napa cabbage; red, green and Savoy cabbage; French breakfast radishes; eggs; fresh whole chickens and fresh cut chicken parts, all certified organic.

Honeyhill Farm will have fresh baby ginger this week, a rainbow of sweet peppers, cherry and heirloom slicing tomatoes, red and golden beets, carrots, sweet onions, garlic, and fresh, pasture raised chicken. K&S Bischoping is bringing Honey Crisp, Macoun, McIntosh, Empire, Cortland, Fuji and Crispin apples, and is adding Orleans Reinette to the many heirloom varieties available. Organic Matters will have lettuces (red and green romaine, butterhead and butter crunch), Bodacious sweet corn, beans, tomatillos, garlic, mustard greens, collards, winter squash and pumpkins (carving, decorative and pie). Bolton Farms will have the last sweet corn of the season; cauliflower; buttercup, butternut, Grey Ghost, Acorn, and Delicata squash; John will also have hydroponic butterhead lettuces, lettuce bouquets, spring mix, watercress, tatsoi, bok choi, parsley, kale, Swiss chard, and escarole.

Shannon Brook Farm is featuring large pasture-raised, certified organic broiler chickens. Chicory Blue Gardens will have bouquets with pretty fall flowers, including blue larkskpur, orlaya, and statice. Happy Hooves Organic Farm will have an assortment of 100% grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork, free ranging hens’ eggs, certified organic and soy-free; Della is also taking orders for organic, pasture-raised soy-free turkeys for fresh pick up at the Winter Market just before Thanksgiving, and for half hogs for November delivery. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm will have maple cotton fluff, maple garlic pepper rub, maple mustard, maple cream spread, and assorted grades of maple syrup.

JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing grape coffee cake with brown sugar topping, baked macaroni and cheese, zucchini bread with chocolate chips and walnuts, and decadent chocolate brownies with pecans and coconut. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, panang, shepherds, and veggie pot pies. Brian’s Kitchen is introducing many varieties of cookies made with white whole wheat flour. Eat Me Ice Cream is bringing s’more ice cream sandwiches — toasted marshmallow and dark chocolate ice cream on a graham cracker (also available in pints and non-dairy), the Hug Up — chocolate and vanilla ice cream on a chocolate and vanilla cookie, and roasted banana ice cream on chocolate cookies. Biscotti for Everybotti is featuring pumpkin biscotti. We welcome back Bloomfield Honey as a guest vendor, offering 10 lb. buckets of freshly harvested raw honey, flavored honeys, soap, lip balms, candles, and beeswax for folks who want to craft their own candles or skin care items

Music this week will be provided by the Rochester Ukelele Orchestra.

We’ll be joined by R Community Bikes; they will collect donations of bikes in any condition, to be refurbished and donated to the needy in our area.

Boy Scout Troop 77 will offer information about its programs.

ColorBrightonGreen.org will collect recycling items; check here for items they are currently able to accept and recycle. Please consider donating to the Brighton Food Cupboard, to support their efforts on behalf of the needy in our community.

SNAP Bonus Program

Don’t forget our EBT/SNAP bonus program. SNAP customers who purchase tokens with their EBT cards will receive a $2 Fresh Connect Check for each $5 in tokens purchased.  The checks can be used at the market just like cash for any EBT-eligible foods.
