Nothing Subtle at Brighton Farmers’ Market
This Week at the Market — August 10
Pale, wan, and subtle are for other months; August at Brighton Farmers’ Market is a boisterous riot of blazing colors, intense flavors, and ripe, juicy abundance. This week Kira, Marina, and Fred of Honeyhill Farm will have piles of red and golden beets, plus cured garlic, cherry and full size tomatoes, super sweet fresh onions, mixed baskets of lettuce, summer squash and zucchini, snap beans, garlic scapes, and fresh, pasture raised chicken, all certified organic. Shady Lane Farm will have sweet onions, Yukon gold and red potatoes, beets, rainbow and gator chard, zucchini, broccoli, green beans, leeks, dill and parsley, and fresh-cut flowers.
Lighthouse Gardens will have certified organic rainbow cherry tomatoes; German white and Italian purple garlic; garlic scapes; baby head lettuce bouquets; yellow, purple and green beans; mixed baby kale; zucchini; striped summer squash; sunflowers; zinnia bouquets; as well as herb, vegetable, berry and ornamental transplants; summer blooming perennials; and organic potting soil. Lakestone Family Farm is bringing rainbow chard, napa cabbage, basil, fava beans, purple string beans, multicolor carrots, baby beets, pickling cucumbers, slicing cucumbers, summer squash, eggs, fresh whole chickens and fresh cut chicken parts, all certified organic.
Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce will have certified organic red and golden beets, radishes, arugula, carrots,
lettuce, garlic, green and purple, cabbage, kale, turnips, pickling cucumbers, and pecks of plum tomatoes, plus 20 lb. bags of carrots and beets in bulk. K&S Bischoping will have Jersey Dawn and Garnet Beauty peaches, Eastern Glo nectarines, blueberries and Pristine apples — the first apples of the season.
Fisher Hill Farm is bringing lots of beans — ask Phil and Sandi about canning and freezing specials; they will also have sweet corn, broccoli, new potatoes, carrots, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, Swiss chard, sweet candy onions, red & golden beets, scallions, radishes, lettuce, garlic, collard greens, fresh whole and half chicken, eggs, and Red Jacket juices. Dearhaven Farm is bringing new potatoes, sweet onions, shallots, scallions, zukes and cukes, cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, cabbage, beets, tender new beet greens, herbs, sugar snap peas, and carrots.
Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing pasture raised pork cuts; lots of grass-fed beef; some fresh seasoned and plain cut up chickens; plain and heritage whole chickens; and eggs from free-ranging hens, everything certified organic and soy free. Fellenz Family Farm is bringing honey and certified organic arugula, spigorello, lettuce, summer squash, cucumbers, sweet peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and eggplant.
Lagoner Farms will have Rising Star and early Red Haven peaches, blueberries, raspberries, apricots, plums, the first Early Gold apples of the season, grape tomatoes, eggplant, cukes, zukes, and beans, radish, beets, and peppers — poblano, jalapeno, and green bell. Organic Matters Farm will have romaine and loose leaf butterhead lettuces; Tuscan and Red Russian kales; Dragon Tongue, green and wax beans; cherry tomatoes; fresh garlic; Shinto and General Lee cucumbers; and Cocozelle, zucchini, and yellow summer squash.
Shannon Brook Farm is featuring certified organic, free-range broiler and roaster chickens for roasting in the oven or, maybe it’s time to try grilled beer-can chicken. Nordic Farm is offering raspberry peach as jam of the week with jam bars to match, using red raspberries from Lagoner Farms and peaches from Williams Farm. Chicory Blue Gardens will have bouquets with blue and pink Chinese forget-me-nots, and lots of lilies. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm suggests maple garlic pepper rub for grilling seafood, chicken, pork, or veggies. Tripleberry Farm is bringing pesticide-free blueberries, berry jams, and goat milk soaps.
Bolton Farms will have hydroponic greens including spring mix, lettuce bouquets, Butterhead Bibb, arugula, tatsoi, bok choi, escarole, Swiss chard, basil, and parsley; from the fields, John will have peppers, tomatoes, sweet corn, beans, and squash. Lavender Moon Herb Gardens will have a variety of herbal products including Bug Off insect repellents; Joe will offer a free hydrangea blossom if you stop and say hello. Allens Hill Farm is bringing Indian game hens, fresh and frozen rabbit, aquaponically grown basil (cut to order) and all natural granola and baking mixes.
Flour City Bread is introducing market baguettes. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, panang veggie, shepherds, and pulled pork pot pies, plus quiche and gooseberry tarts. JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing blueberry pies, pineapple upside-down cake, lemon-raspberry pound cake, and roast turkey sandwiches featuring turkey from Fisher Hill Farm on fresh hoagie rolls. Small World Food is bringing country multigrain, beet, kvass, pickled garlic scapes, maple cashew granola, and rolled oats.

The Bushel Brothers join us in the music tent. Representatives from the Genesee Transportation Council will offer information about the the organization’s work to improve transportation in our region.
ColorBrightonGreen.org will collect recycling items; check here for items they are currently able to accept and recycle. The group is also looking for more volunteers to help with these collections; please consider helping this good cause.
