New Summer Treats at the Market
This Week at the Market — July 13
New only-in-summer treats are arriving at the Brighton Farmers’ Market. This week K&S Bischoping is bringing tart, juicy, ruby-like currants, wonderful in jellies and dessert sauces, and gooseberries, perfect for a fool, and please don’t take that personally. Time for pie — sour cherries are being harvested on Lagoner Farms, along with sweet cherries, blueberries, raspberries, beans, peas, beets, and broccoli. Fisher Hill Farm will have golden and red beets, scallions, scapes, fresh garlic, fresh cooking onions, peas (shelling, sugar snap, snow), zucchini, summer squash, Swiss chard, carrots, lettuce potatoes, chicken, eggs, and Red Jacket juices.
Buzz’s Garden will have sugar snap peas, beets, carrots, lettuce, scallions, lime and Rosie basil, rainbow Swiss chard, pac choy, and the first eggplant at the market this season. Lighthouse Gardens is bringing certified organic cherry tomatoes; fresh garlic; garlic scapes; baby head lettuce bouquets; herb, vegetable, berry and ornamental transplants; wheatgrass; bedding plants; premium annuals; summer blooming perennials; herb planters; and organic potting soil.
Squash Blossom Farm will have cherry tomatoes, squash, basil, kale, escarole, cabbage, lettuce, radicchio, sorrel, squash blossoms, Italian dandelion, and peppermint. Dearhaven Farm is bringing sugar snap peas, black raspberries, zucchini, cucumbers, kohlrabi, scallions, basil and other herbs, lettuce, beets, and carrots. Shady Lane Farm is bringing sugar snap peas, zucchini and yellow squash, broccoli, purple onions, Swiss chard, kohlrabi, Italian parsley and bail, colorful summer bouquets, and — veggie of the week — rat-tailed radishes.
Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce will have certified organic sweet carrots, beets, kale, red and green leaf lettuce, radishes, turnips, green beans, garlic, and garlic scapes. Organic Matters will have sugar snap and shelling peas, Galactic red leaf and Defender green lettuces, butter crisp and soft green head lettuces, Tuscan and Red Russian kale, multi-colored radishes, and large and medium zucchini.
Happy Hooves Organic Farm will have free-range eggs, frozen chickens (whole and cuts, grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork, all organic and soy-free. Fellenz Family Farm is bringing honey and certified organic lettuce, spinach, summer squash, cucumbers, fresh garlic, raspberries, carrots, kale, Swiss chard, beets, kohlrabi, container herbs, and tomatoes. R&M Bischoping will have shelling and sugar snap peas, red Russian and dinosaur kale, Swiss chard, radishes, baby zucchini, cucumbers, and zinnia bouquets.
Bolton Farms will have kale, Swiss chard, arugula, mustard greens, butterhead bibb lettuce, lettuce bouquets, spring mix, escarole, parsley, and basil. Allens Hill Farm is bringing fodder-fed rabbit, free-range heritage chickens, herbs, and dukkah. Chicory Blue Gardens will have purple agrostemma and lots of zinnias. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring certified organic pork chops, great on the grill and thick enough to be stuffed.
Kurt of Clearview Farm will have certified organic sacred kale (did you bless it, Kurt?), bok choy, scallions, free-range and organically-fed eggs, garlic scapes, thyme, lemon mint, Italian oregano, Italian flat leaf parsley, and garden cover crop buckwheat. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm will have lots of maple products, a recipe for lemonade using pure maple syrup, and suggests topping your fresh berries with maple cream spread. Seaway Trail Honey is bringing local, seasonal, and fresh honey, and some honeycomb.
JonJohn’s Bakery will have pecan chocolate brownie muffins, blueberry cobbler and pies, and Grandma’s triple berry breakfast cake. Pasta Classics is offering new stuffed bread flavors: country sweet spicy chicken, cheddar, and mozzarella, and ravioli flavors including broccoli gorgonzola and black bean, pepper jack, and cilantro. Tripleberry Farm will have pesticide-free berry jams, including fresh tripleberry and blackberry, plus goat milk soaps.
Eat Me Ice Cream is bringing lavender goat cheese ice cream pints and sandwiches, lavender coconut (vegan version), and local cherry ice candy. Nordic Farm is introducing juneberry jam and jam bars; juneberries are a highly nutritious fruit newly introduced to this area, similar in taste to a blueberry but more nutritious. Small World Food will have country multigrain bread, maple cashew granola, fermented roots, and sauerkrauts.
Newbury Park Pastries is bringing chicken, veggie, lobster mac & cheese, and pulled pork pot pies; quiche; and tarts. Flour City Pasta is bringing Thai chili mafaldine with a recipe. Friends of Ganondagon will offer Iroquois white corn products (hulled white corn, roasted corn flour, and white corn flour), grown in Victor using the same methods as their ancestors, the Haudenosaunee, did.
Also at the Market
Music this week is by Grant Cos, Babak Elahi, and the Golden Link All-Stars. The Brighton FIre Department will join us with fire trucks and other equipment, and will offer safety information; kids welcome! Representatives from the Montessori School of Rochester will offer information about the school’s programs. The Brighton Bicentennial Committee will have information and t-shirts.
ColorBrightonGreen.org will collect recycling items; check here for items they are currently able to accept and recycle. The group is also looking for more volunteers to help with these collections; please consider helping this good cause.
