This Week at the Market

Every week is a celebration of the harvest at Brighton Farmers’ Market!  This week at the market there will be lots for which to be thankful, including the farmers who bring us such wonderful food.  You’ll find just about everything you need for a bountiful, local Thanksgiving feast this week at the market.  And don’t forget to thank a farmer!

Lily and her family at Fisher Hill Farm will have some smaller turkeys plus lots of vegetables, including giant cauliflower, sweet potatoes, rutabaga, root vegetables, potatoes, onions, broccoli, cabbage, bunched beets, leeks, kale, grapes, lettuce, winter squash, and peppers, plus chicken. Growing Family Farm is bringing tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, Swiss chard, dried and fresh mushrooms, free-range eggs and Jerusalem artichokes, plus some items from Small World Food. Lagoner Farms will have lots of apples, including Cortland, Braeburn, Ida Red, Empire, Crispin, and Jonagold, plus Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, carrots, leeks, cauliflower, onions, and Bosc pears.

Honeyhill Farm is bringing certified organic carrots, kale, four varieties of potatoes, baby ginger, onions, shallots, garlic, frozen chickens (including large ones), and is offering a special price on potatoes. Clearview Farm is bringing certified organic chestnuts, Jerusalem artichokes, Brussels sprouts, dry pinto and black beans, baby potatoes, Black Futsu winter squash, escarole, arugula, turnips, Munchnerbier radishes, carrots, scallions, eshallions, shallots, leeks, garlic, and free-range organically-fed eggs. Lighthouse Gardens will have certified organic rainbow colored cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, napa cabbage, rainbow Swiss chard, multiple varieties of kale, beets, purple top turnips, garlic, baby leeks, mixed mini-head lettuce bouquets, braising greens mix, wheatgrass, a variety of herb plants, and organic potting soil.

Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing sweet fall carrots, green and purple cabbage, spinach, radishes, arugula, sweet potatoes, green kale, garlic, beets, and butternut and acorn squash. Fellenz Family Farm will have certified organic apples, potatoes (Red Maria, Salem, Keuka Gold, and French fingerling), red onions, shallots, garlic, lettuce baskets, Hakurei turnips (great in salads), Kossak kholrabi, celeriac, and leeks. K&S Bischoping will have apples, including Honey Crisp, Jonagold, Cortland, and Crispin, plus an assortment of heirloom varieties. Ann’s Purple Produce is bringing watermelon radishes, deep purple carrots, purple fingerling potatoes, Peruvian Papa Chaco fingerling potatoes, purple scallions, baby leeks, baby Chioggia and golden beets, freshly-cut purple sage and parsley, edible Jarrahdale pumpkins, decorative mini-pumpkins, bittersweet, and Jerusalem artichokes.

Happy Hooves Organic Farm will have certified organic, grass-fed beef and organically-fed pork sausages. Bolton Farms is bringing lettuce bouquets, spring mix, Boston Bibb, arugula, kale, micro greens, parsley, basil, cauliflower, and winter squash. Seaway Trail Honey will have light sweet tea honey and darker late season honeys, plus honey in the comb; all are certified Kosher for Hannukah.  Pat will also have recipes for making honey-sweetened cranberry relish for your Thanksgiving feast. Allens Hill Farm is bringing Dukkah sampler gift boxes, free-range chicken eggs, and apple cider molasses granola.  Shannon Brook Farm suggests Pekin duck for Thanksgiving, and will also offer grass-fed, organically-raised lamb. Wolhschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is featuring their new reusable maple mug, filled with pure maple syrup, a great gift. Pasta Classics will have pumpkin, butternut squash, and sweet potato walnut and raisin ravioli. JonJohn’s Bakery is offering sweet potato pies, Beyond Chocolate cakes, carrot cakes, and roast turkey dinner with fresh parsnips and carrots (from Fisher Hill Farm). Newbury Park Pastries is bringing chicken, veggie, and turkey pot pies. Nordic Farm will have brown eggs, jams, pickles, salsa, granola, and peanut granola bars.

Also at the Market

We will enjoy lovely piano music from Olivia Frise. ColorBrightonGreen.org will collect hard-to-recycle items. Brighton Food Cupboard will accept donations of food and cash to help support its mission of providing food to the needy in our community. The need is especially great during the holiday season; a list of items needed can be found here.

Brighton Winter Farmers’ Market is held Sundays, 1 to 4 pm, through April 13, 2014.  It’s located in Brighton’s Brookside Center, 220 Idlewood Road, Rochester. There is a second entrance to the building, easily accessible, from S. Winton, between Westfall and 590 (just south of Westfall).
