This Week at the Market – June 21

Good fathers, good farmers — Happy Father’s Day to the farmer fathers at the Brighton Farmers’ Market, and to all fathers in our market community. This Sunday bring a father in your life to the Market, then share a delicious Father’s Day celebration with wonderful food, fresh from local farms.

Jake Lagoner reports that Lagoner Farms should have a good supply of strawberries, plus Jonagold and Crispin apples, radish, turnips, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, rhubarb, and asparagus. East Hill Farm is bringing eggs from heritage breed hens, fennel, mint, cilantro, scallions, garlic scapes, radish, salad turnips, specialty greens, three varieties of head lettuce, chard, kale, and summer squash.

Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce will have certified organic red beets, garlic scapes, spinach, red radishes, Hakurei turnips, arugula, rainbow chard, green kale, red and green leaf lettuces, green cabbage, garlic powder, and sauerkraut. Dearhaven Farm is bringing Romanesco cauliflower, green cabbage, kohlrabi, scallions, sugar snap peas, lettuce heads and loose mixes, green amaranth (similar to spinach), the first zucchini, fennel, and herbs, all certified organic.

Shady Lane Farm is bringing rainbow chard, spring garlic, green onions, Cuban and chocolate mint, mixed herb bunches, and cut flower bouquets. R&M Bischoping will have strawberries, alfalfa sprouts, dried black beans, and the farm’s first sugar snap peas. Clearview Farm will have certified organic rhubarb, scallions, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, lemon mint, dry cannellini and black beans, and certified organic eggs. Organic Matters Farm is bringing asparagus, garlic scapes, and chives.

Fellenz Family Farm will have certified organic transplants, lettuces (Canary Tongue and Cherokee), sorrel, mizuna, komatsuna, strawberries, very limited quantities of raspberries and summer squash, cabbage, broccoli raab, salad mix, garlic scapes, and rhubarb. Growing Family Farm is bringing Japanese and English cucumbers, fresh cut basil, pea shoots, scarlet and Tuscan kale, rainbow chard, Italian dandelion, fresh wine cap mushrooms, garlic scapes, and Singer Naturals tart cherry juice.

Happy Hooves Organic Farm will have soy-free eggs from free ranging hens, soy-free pork from pastured pigs, and 100% grass fed and finished beef, all certified organic and non-GMO. Buzz’s Garden is bringing kale, Swiss chard, spinach, salad mix, garlic scapes, baby summer squash, and maybe some cherry tomatoes. Honeyhill Farm is bringing certified organic lettuce, fresh scapes, pickled scapes, fresh and frozen chicken, and select cuts of 100% grass fed beef.

Shannon Brook Farm is featuring certified organic, pasture-raised large fresh ham and suggests this recipe, which would be extra delicious made with maple syrup from Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm, who will have four grades of maple syrup, maple garlic pepper rub (pairs well with seafood, chicken, pork, burgers, and veggies, and maple cream spread, delicious on strawberries.  Seaway Trail Honey is bringing local seasonal honey and honeycomb, will offer free honey tastings, and will display live bees from non-profit NY Bee Wellness.

Bolton Farms will have Boston bibb lettuce, lettuce bouquets, spring mix, arugula, watercress, mustard greens, lacinato kale, micro greens, Swiss chard, pea tendrils, bok choi, cilantro, tatsoi, and basil. Smugtown Mushrooms will have fresh oyster mushrooms, mushroom grow kits, kombucha start kits, fresh cut herbs, and flowers. Fisher Hill Farm is bringing fresh chicken, zucchini, cucumbers, peas, green garlic, scapes, spring onions, lettuce, potatoes, onions, radish, rhubarb, strawberries, eggs, and Red Jacket juices.

Iroquois White Corn Project will sample fresh salsa with hulled Iroquois white corn. Nordic Farms is offering many fresh jams, three kinds of granola, three kinds of British style scones, and three kinds of beet pickles. JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing BBQ chicken sandwiches and baked macaroni and cheese, banana pudding, strawberry-rhubarb pie, Or-e-o cheesecake brownies, strawberry and sweet potato tarts, lemon blueberry pound cake, raspberry blueberry coffee cake, beyond chocolate cake, vanilla-strawberry cake, peanut butter balls, sour cream muffins, and chocolate chip and oatmeal cranberry cookies.

Tripleberry Farm will have fresh pesticide-free jams including strawberry peach and goat milk soaps, including jewel weed for poison ivy. EatMe Ice Cream is bringing strawberry ice cream, dairy and non-dairy. Biscotti for Everybotti will have gluten-free chocolate, vegan coconut, and cinnamon biscotti. Newbury Park Pastries will have Philly cheese steak, chicken, panang, shepherds, veggie, and pulled pork pot pies, and quiche. Le Petit Poutine will offer breakfast sausage gravy poutine, bacon and egg poutine, lemon bars, s’more bites, and lemon lavender and ginger soda.

Community Composting will have 50 lb. compost bags, and will offer free trial on composting services with sign-up at the Market; meet the folks from Impact Earth, the Zero Waste providers. Rise and Shine Bread is bringing English muffin bread, asiago chiabatta, rosemary focaccia, wheat, honey wheat, rye, pumpernickel, raisin, sweet breads, and brownies. Flour City Pasta will have cucumber gnocchette and suggests this salad.
