Modern Farming
This Week at the Market — April 24, 2016
You might assume that farming today is a high-tech, fully modernized business. In some quarters, it probably is. In our quarters, farmers make do. Check out how Phil Munson of Fisher Hill Farm recently planted 2,500 pounds of potatoes, “in no time” with his 1953 tractor pulling a potato planter designed to be pulled by horses. This week at the Market Phil is bringing frozen whole chicken, kale, green garlic, cabbage, potatoes, parsnips, carrots, onions, beets, rutabaga, kohlrabi, spring mix lettuce, eggs, frozen turkey, and Red Jacket juices.
Growing Family Farms will have arugula; wheatgrass; potted basil, cilantro, parsley, and dill; pea shoots, sunnies, scallions, free range eggs, Singer Farm Naturals tarta cherry juice, and Small World ferments. Andy’s Specialty Garrlic & Produce is bringing fresh-picked tender spinach, carrots, green kale, celeriac, and frozen tomatoes and peppers.
Fellenz Family Farm will have kale, spinach, honey, arugula, komatsuna, and eggs. Bolton Farms is bringing butterhead bibb lettuce, spring mix, lettuce bouquets, arugula, bok choi, parsley, micro greens, red Russian kale, curly kale, Tuscan kale, Swiss chard, sorrel, butternut squash, and escarole. Lakestone Family Farm is bringing eggs and greens.
Clearview Farm will have ramps (wild leeks with recipes available), eggs in various sizes and colors, Callan Farms dry black beans, Italy Hill popcorn, buckwheat, herbs (sage, Italian oregano, Genovese basil, lemon basil, and lemon mint), and 100% grass-fed Angus beef, ground and other cuts. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring organically-fed meaty pork spare ribs and grass-fed ground lamb and lamb sausages–perfect for the grill.
Buzz’s Garden is bringing baby lettuce mix and spinach. Smugtown Mushrooms will have fresh oyster, shiitake, and king trumpet mushrooms; kombucha kits, mushroom grow kits, tincture, and freshly foraged ramps. Seaway Trail Honey is bringing local, raw, seasonal honey and honeycomb in different sizes, a limited quantity of apple blossom honey, and fine naturally creamed early summer and fall honey, all certified kosher for Passover.
Nordic Farm will have paleo cookies, brownies, and whoopie pies; jams and jellies; and bread and butter pickes with zukes and cukes. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, pulled pork, shepherds, veggie, pannang, and beef stew pot pies.
