Midwinter at the Market
This Week at the Market – January 18
We’re more than halfway through January; winter has really settled in. But days are getting longer, and farmers are ordering seeds. Midwinter used to mean the end of locally-grown fruits and vegetables, but no longer. This week at Brighton Farmers’ Market, Fisher Hill Farm will have squash, parsnips, carrots, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, rutabaga, celeriac, cabbage, garlic, beets, leeks, frozen turkeys, and frozen corn, peas, and strawberries: Phil and Sandi are offering a January special on frozen chicken — buy three, get one free. Growing Family Farms will have mixed greens, pea shoots, dried shiitakes, butternut squash, Small World ferments and granola, and Singer Farms tart cherry juice concentrate.
Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing certified organic sweet carrots (available also in 20 pound bags for juicing), garlic powder, kale, sweet potatoes, daikon radishes, Chinese cabbage, garlic, green and purple cabbage, butternut squash, turnips, and beets. Fellenz Family Farm will have certified organic spinach, potatoes, garlic, red onions, rutabaga, kohlibri kohlrabi, butternut squash, honey, eggs (discount on quantity), and Wild Thistle herbal products.
Happy Hooves Organic Farm will have 100% grass-fed and finished beef, pasture-raised pork (some on sale), free-ranging stewing chickens, pasture-raised meaty roasting chickens (with organs), all organic and no-soy. Bolton Farms is bringing spring mix, lettuce bouquets, bibb lettuce, tatsoi, micro greens, parsley, cilantro, kale, super sweet butternut squash, and grey kabocha squash. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring pasture-raised, organically-fed pork sausages — zesty, mild, and hot Italian and breakfast.
Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, shepherds, panang, and pulled pork pot pies. Pasta Classics is bringing ravioli, gnocchi, fresh garlic and pepper pasta, and baked stuffed breads. Wohlschlegels Naples Maple Farm will have a fresh batch of granulated maple sugar in five ounce shakers and one pound sizes, plus maple mustard with a kick, delicious with football snacks. Tripleberry Farm is bringing freshly-made jams with fruit from local farms, including grape, peach, and pesticide-free berry, goat milk soaps, and sugar plums.
