This Week at the Market – October 12

As warm days give way to chilly ones, how thoughtful of Mother Nature to offer just the kinds of foods we want to eat now — hearty squashes and pumpkins and sturdy root vegetables for comforting soups and stews, Brussels sprouts to roast, apples and pears for sauce and pies. The tables at Brighton Farmers’ Market will be piled high this week with plenty to warm kitchens and hearts as we pull sweaters close.

Growing Family Farm is bringing heirloom tomatoes; eggplant; peppers, acorn, butternut, buttercup, and celebration squash; Nantucket pie pumpkins; garlic; rainbow chard; Singer Naturals tart cherry, Concord grape, and apple concentrates. Squash Blossom Farm will have kale, escarole, radicchio, sugarloaf chicory, cardoons, leeks, watercress, concord grapes, and celery. Lagoner Farms will have Bosc pears, raspberries, colored peppers, tomatoes, and lots of apples — McIntosh, Cortland, Gala, Autumn Crisp, Northern Spy, Jonagold, Snapdragon, and Honeycrisp.

Shady Lane Farm is bringing sweet red peppers, jalapenos, edamame, the last of the cherry tomatoes, purple potatoes and French fingerlings, sweet and cooking onions, garlic, leeks, assorted winter squash, sweet potatoes, pie pumpkins, decorative gourds, parsley and marjoram, and colorful autumn bouquets. Ann’s Purple Produce will have the first of the watermelon radishes, purple and French Fingerling potatoes, ground cherries, purple peppers, eggplant, Bright Lights Swiss chard, baby summer squash, red chesnok garlic, parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme, dill, basil, bouquets, dahlias, purple statice, lavender bunches bunches,  potted herbs, shade and sun perennials, bittersweet branches, sunflower heads, and elephant head amaranth.

Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing certified organic spinach, radishes, carrots, kale, sweet potatoes, red and golden beets, cucumbers, acorn and butternut squashes, turnips, pie pumpkins, green and purple cabbage, garlic, arugula, green beans, and zucchini.
Bolton Farms will have hydroponic lettuces (Bibb, bouquets, and spring mix), arugula, watercress, tatsoi, swiss chard, micro greens, red Russian kale, spinach, culantro, escarole, and mustard greens; John will also have soil-grown winter squash (buttercup, Red Hubbard, Acorn, Delicata, Grey Ghost, Butternut), sweet peppers, and cauliflower.

K&S Bischoping will have Honey Crisp, Crispin, Northern Spy, Empire, Cortland, McIntosh, Macoun, Fuji, Gala and Ozark Gold apples; heirloom varieties include Stayman Winesap and Grey Baldwin, among many others. Organic Matters will have lettuces (red romaine, butterhead, butter crisp and Nevada), beans, collards, mustard greens, beets, tomatillos, garlic, winter squash, and pumpkins.  R&M Bischoping is bringing
tomatillos, hot peppers, sunflowers, red Russian and lacinato kale, colorful bouquets, cherry tomatoes, green beans, red slicing tomatoes, dried black beans and alfalfa sprouts.

Lakestone Family Farm is featuring spinach and kale — traditional curly, red Russian, and lacinato, rainbow chard, bicolor mustard greens, arugula, field greens, cabbage (napa, savoy, red, and green), leeks, baby bok choi, zucchini and summer squash, several varieties of eggplant including little finger eggplants in pickling quantities, squash (delicata, acorn, and buttercup), garlic, pie pumpkins, eggs, and chicken — whole birds, cuts, and feet, neck and livers for soups and stocks. Fellenz Family Farm will have spinach, lettuce, arugula, kale, beets, celeriac, kohlrabi, leeks, hakurei turnips, watermelon radishes, potatoes, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, ground cherries, tomatillos, ancho and poblano peppers, sweet peppers, eggplant, apples, garlic, shallots, red and yellow onions, and honey.

Honeyhill Farm is bringing the last of the fresh chickens for the year and will take orders for frozen chickens; Fred will also have fresh baby ginger, multi-colored beets, carrots, sweet onions, and shallots. Clearview Farm will have fennel, ground cherries, acorn squash, Baby Pam pie pumpkins, Judy’s kale,  dill and other herbs, poblano peppers, leeks, scallions, eschallions, garlic, and free-range organically-fed eggs. Happy Hooves Organic Farm will have an assortment of 100% grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork, free ranging hens’ eggs, certified organic and soy-free; Della is also taking orders for organic, pasture-raised soy-free turkeys for fresh pick up at the Winter Market just before Thanksgiving, and for half hogs for November delivery.

Seaway Trail Honey is bringing fresh, raw seasonal honey and honeycomb, including flavorful fall honey. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring certified organic, pasture-raised broiler chickens and fresh hams. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm will have a fresh batch of maple cream spread and assorted maple products. Nordic Farm is featuring red raspberry jam and jam bars made with fall raspberries. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, shepherds, lobster mac & cheese and panang pot pies, plus grape, pumpkin, and apple pies.

Small World Food will have pickled onions, garlic scape pesto, and garlic scape compound butter, along with First Light Farm products. Eat Me Ice Cream will have lavender goat cheese ice cream on shortbread, roasted banana ice cream on a chocolate cookie, vegan s’mores ice cream sandwiches, and a variety of pints. Biscotti for Everybotti will have gluten-free pumpkin biscotti and seasonal maple biscotti. JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing baked macaroni and cheese, chocolate decadence cake, peach cobbler, and grape coffee cake with brown sugar topping.

Allens Hill Farm is bringing fresh rabbit, Genovese basil, free-range chicken eggs, dukkah gift packs, seven varieties of apple cider molasses granola, and baking mixes. Lavender Moon will have herbal products including fair trade hot chocolate, moisturizing creams, warming herbal comforters, herbal teas, and flu-fighters such as elderberry syrup and Echinacea.

Also at the Market

Music will be provided by Ben Sheridan and Ben Haravitch. Representatives from Rochester Museum and Science Center’s Women’s Council will offer information. Volunteers from Winton Road Nursery School will offer information about programs at the School. Chabad House will display a sukkot booth on a bicycle.

SNAP Bonus Program

Don’t forget our EBT/SNAP bonus program. SNAP customers who purchase tokens with their EBT cards will receive a $2 Fresh Connect Check for each $5 in tokens purchased.  The checks can be used at the market just like cash for any EBT-eligible foods.

Winter Market

The summer Market runs through October 26, and the Brighton Winter Farmers’ Market opens the following week, November 2.  It will be held Sunday afternoons, 1 to 4 pm, at Brighton’s Brookside Center, 220 Idlewood Road.  There is a second entrance to the building just off of S. Winton Road, between Westfall and 590.  Many of the vendors from the summer market will offer product throughout the winter.

The Brighton Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday through October 26 from 9 am to 1 pm.  It is held in the Brighton High School parking lot, 1150 Winton Road S., and is sponsored by the Town of Brighton.
