This Week at the Market

We like to think that we’re always green at the Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market, but this Sunday for St. Patrick’s Day we’ll be especially green, and feeling very Irish as well.  Bolton Farms’ table will be a field of green, covered with lettuce bouquets, bibb lettuce, spring mix, bok choy, tatsoi, arugula, fresh herbs, and more.  All Nordic Farms’ green jams will be on sale — green sweet pepper jelly, hot pepper jelly, and mint jelly.  Kurt of Clearview Farm points out that his free-range, organically-fed eggs have rich, deep yellow yolks because of the green alfalfa-timothy hay the chickens eat.  Kurt will also have dried herbs (green), dried hot peppers (red and green), turnips (with green tops), daikon and black Spanish radishes, and Reba potatoes.

Fisher Hill Farm is bringing large frozen chickens, which you could roast with the farm’s cabbage, carrots, parsnips, celeriac, rutabaga, potatoes, onions (sweet and cooking, shallots, or garlic; Phil and Sandi will also have frozen corn and frozen half turkeys.  Lakestone Family Farm will have eggs from the certified organic farm, including some naturally pale green eggs, very beautiful.  Small World Bakery is bringing black bean and raisin bread, gluten-free peanut butter cookies, and spicy sauerkraut.  Tocoti Chocolate will have artisan chocolate bars, Easter bunnies, hand-painted peanut butter eggs, and chocolate toffee matzoh.  There will also be milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, fresh and dried pasta, cookies, bread, and more.

Also at the Market

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we will be joined by the recorder quarter the Green Horns, who will play some Celtic tunes for us.  Hard-to-recycle items may be brought to the market this week.

The Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market will be closed on Easter Sunday, March 31, and will return the following week.

The Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market, a collaboration between Brighton and South Wedge Farmers’ Markets, is held on Sundays, 1 to 4 pm, through May 19.  It is held at 220 Idlewood Road, with a second entrance off S. Winton between Westfall and 590.  The market is sponsored by the Town of Brighton.
