This Week at the Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market

Lily insists on maple syrup from Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm for her waffles.  This year’s maple season is off to a good start on Wohlschlegels’ farm in the Naples hills; Bobbi and Garry have boiled about 10,000 gallons of sap so far from 4,000 taps.  Their “First Run Syrup” has a nice hint of vanilla. Bobbi  will have a wide variety of maple products at the market this Sunday, February 24, including syrups in several grades and colors, maple cream, hot maple mustard, and soft molded maple candies; ask Bobbi about the farm’s Open House and Pancake Breakfasts in March.  Lily’s farm, Fisher Hill Farm, will have fresh chicken this week; the chickens are just under five pounds and are delicious roasted with lots of vegetables, which Fisher Hill can also provide — carrots, parsnips, celeriac, rutabaga, potatoes, onions, beets, shallots, garlic, cabbage, plus frozen corn and rhubarb, and frozen half turkeys.

Clearview Farm will have dry beans (black, navy, red kidney, red merlot, and pinto), free-range and organically-fed eggs, butternut squash, red beets, Reba white potatoes, shallots, shallot-like onions, black Spanish and daikon radishes, turnips, parsnips, dried herbs, and dried hot peppers. Bolton Farms is bringing fresh lettuces, basil, arugula, tatsoi, swiss chard, and cilantro.  Seaway Trail Honey will have an assortment of seasonal honeys to sweeten late winter.  Tocoti Chocolate is bringing fresh ground micro-batch artisan chocolate bars.

Newbury Park Pastries is bringing chicken, veggie, and beef stew pot pies; snowflake sugar cookies; and rugelach.  Tripleberry Farm will have pesticide-free berry jams, tripleberry blondies and blueberry double chocolate brownies, fudge, and goat’s milk soap made from locally-sourced milk.  Small World Bakery is bringing Jewish rye bread, fermented garlic paste, and vegan cookies.

We’re glad to welcome Cabbage & Baggage back to perform their cool celtic/jazz fusion music, if there is such a thing.  Bring your hard-to-recycle items this week.

The Long Season Winter Farmers’ Market, a collaboration between Brighton and South Wedge Farmers’ Markets, is held on Sundays, 1 to 4 pm, throughout the winter.  It is held at 220 Idlewood Road, with a second entrance off S.
