This Week at the Market – August 21, 2016

Mid-August is a beautiful time at Brighton Farmers’ Market. Tables are piled high with brightly colored fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Colors and flavors are all at their peak of just-picked freshness. This week Chicory Blue Gardens will have buckets of gorgeous glads, zinnias, sunflowers, and green millet. Growing Family Farms is bringing certified organic tomatoes, sweet orange grape and cherry tomatoes, red and yellow Italian roasting peppers, Mediterranean zucchini, Rampicante squash, Japanese eggplant, sweet red and white onions, celery, rainbow chard, salad mix, romaine, bibb, devil’s ear lettuce, log-grown shiitakes, pasture raised eggs, and Singer Naturals tart cherry juice.

Dearhaven Farm is bringing certiifed organic chard, leeks, sweet red and white onions, garlic, carrots, sweet peppers, eggplant, hot peppers, zukes and cukes, cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, shallots, lemongrass, and other herbs. Lighthouse Gardens will have certiifed organic cherry and saladette tomatoes, sweet peppers, potatoes, tricolor beans, garlic, mixed salad greens, lettuce bouquets, baby rainbow Swiss chard, new potatoes, fresh cut herbs, a large variety of certified organic herb and vegetable transplants (including lettuces, kales, and chards), succulent planters, perennials, lettuce bowls, herb planters, berry plants, patio tomato and pepper planters, sunflowers, and cut flower bouquets.

Buzz’s Garden is bringing certified organic cantaloupes, charentais melons, honeydew, heirloom tomatoes, cherry and saladette tomatoes, spaghetti squash, delicata squash, sweet peppers, jalapenos, basil, celery, leeks, yellow and green zucchini, yellow and green beans, garlic, radishes, Swiss chard, potatoes, Spanish onions, red and pearl onions; quantity discounts for melons, cherry tomatoes, beans, and basil ([email protected] for preorders). Shannon Brook Farm is featuring pasture-raised, organically-fed center cut pork chops for the grill.

Smugtown Mushrooms is bringing shiitake and golden oyster mushrooms, kombucha kits, mushroom grow kits, and medicinals. Flowerwell will have flower bouquets loaded with late summer blooms, including grab and go bouquets and arrangements. K&S Bischoping is bringing blackberries, Pristine apples, and heirloom apples including Gravenstein and Duchess of Oldenburg.

Bolton Farms will have lettuces, kale, watercress, Swiss chard, basil, parsley, spicy mix, sweet corn, and tomatoes. Clearview Farm is bringing organic tomatillos, cucumbers, patty pan summer squash, tomatoes, red peppers, Callan Farms dry black beans, buckwheat, lemon and Genovese basil, eggs, 100% grass-grown Angus beef, born and raised on the farm.

Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing certified organic watermelons, plum and slicing tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers, beets, sweet onions, green beans, sweet peppers, carrots, salad mix, arugula, lettuce, red potatoes, zucchini, green cabbage, spinach, escarole. Stonecrop Farm will have fresh certified organic whole chickens, chicken parts, duck, and eggs, as well as frozen cuts of pasture raised pork, with a recipe for pork skin braciole.

Honeybee Happy & Healthy Herbs is bringing freshly cut purple basil, flat leaf and curly parsley, cilantro, dill, French tarragon, chives, sage, thyme, peppermint, spearmint, hot peppers, raw honey, sun gold cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, zucchini squash, elderberries, tea, and spices. R&M Bischoping will have green beans, cherry tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, kale, Swiss chard, fresh cut basil, watermelon, cantaloupe, zucchini and summer squash, sunflower bouquets, dried beans, and beeswax lotion bars and lip balms.

Tripleberry Farm is bringing pesticide-free fall strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries, plus fresh peach jams and berry jams, and goat milk soaps. Fellenz Family Farm will have tomatoes — cherry, slicing, salad, and Roma (bulk boxes available–email [email protected]  before 4 am Sunday to pre-order); eggplant; Hakurei turnips, garlic, and fresh herbs.

Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing bag size maple cotton candy, tastings of assorted maple products, three flavors of maple syrup (golden, amber, and dark), maple cream spread, maple garlic rub, granulated maple sugar, all natural maple dog biscuits, and body care products — maple vanilla soap, lotion, and lip balm. Seaway Trail Honey will have varieites of fresh, seasonal honey and honeycomb, all raw and local, certified Kosher; visit the the educational display for local nonprofit NY Bee Wellness, with live honey bees.

Nordic Farm is bringing red hot pepper jelly, fresh peach jam made with K&S Bischoping peaches, cute bread and butter pickles, and regular and hot dill pickles. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, shepherds, and panang pot pies plus lemon cream blueberry Piccadilly pies and galettes featuring fruit from Noto Farm and Tripleberry Farm.

Eat Me Ice Cream is bringing ice cream sammies: sesame szechuan peach (dairy and non), the Hug Up (chocolate and vanilla on vanilla cookies with sprinkles, dairy), S’Mores (chocolate ice cream with toasted marshmallow on graham cracker, non dairy); freeze pops (watermelon, blueberry, and Just Juice berry red), and from Just Juice — Anti Inflamm, Beet It, Kale Ale, Summer MInt, and Orange Blush. JonJohn’s Bakery will have chuck roast sandwiches and macaroni and cheese for lunch, and for dessert — zucchini muffins, fresh plum coffee cake, fresh fruit pies and cobblers, lemon blueberry cake, fresh blueberry and raspberry muffins, chocolate brownies muffins, crazy peanut butter brownies, carrot cake, cheesecake brownies, croissants, peanut butter balls, double decker cake, and Grandma’s breakfast cake.

Brian’s Kitchen will have old fashioned cookies and fudge. Small World Food is featuring the last of this year’s batch of black bean miso. Rise and Shine Bread will have English muffin bread, asiago ciabatta, focaccia, honey wheat, beer bread, raisin, and sweet breads.

Pasta Classics is bringing handmade ravioli including roasted red pepepr and goat cheese, black bean, and pepper jack and cilantro, plus fresh pasta flavors including lemon pepper and tomato basil. Fuego Coffee will have two kinds of cold brew, hot coffee, iced tea, lemonade, and cookies.

Happy Earth Tea will have cold brew Himalayan imperial, iced Bombay Chai, iced Happy Hibiscus and a range of fresh organic and artisan teas including herbal blends. Biscotti for Everybotti is bringing espresso chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, gluten free coconut, and vegan oatmeal raisin biscotti.

Flour City Pasta is introducing squid ink pasta and will offer a suggested recipe to serve it with shrimp and scallops. Impact Earth will collect food scraps, electronic recycling, batteries, lightbulbs and one gallon jugs at the collection site near the food trucks; more info at http://www.impactearthinc.org/.

Volunteers will offer information on the 2016 Warrior Walk: Celebrating LIfe Beyond Cancer, to benefit the Judy Fund at Wilmot Cancer Center.

This week is the Sunday Walk to explore the new green infrastructure at Brighton High School and Middle School; meet at 9:30 in front of the High School; learn about the purpose of the plants and hard scape design.

EBT/SNAP Bonus Program/Fresh Connect Checks

We’re pleased to offer our Market Bonus Program for EBT/SNAP customers. Purchase at least $10 in tokens with an EBT card, and receive $5 in bonus tokens to be used at the market to purchase EBT eligible foods. We now are also offering Fresh Connect Checks to SNAP customers; this state-funded program allows us to give a $2 Fresh Connect Check with each $5 in tokens purchased with an EBT/SNAP card, which can be used to purchase any SNAP-eligible foods at the market.
