This Week at the Market – May 26, 2019

Local asparagus, local rhubarb — does anything announce spring’s arrival more deliciously? Farmers are harvesting spring crops and will bring them to Brighton Farmers’ Market this Sunday. Lagoner Farms will have asparagus and rhubarb, plus apples from cold storage — Crispin, Jonagold, and Empire. Growing Family Farms will have spring onions and green garlic, plus spring crop salad mix, escarole, endive, rainbow chard, Italian dandelion, dinosaur kale, pea shoots, nursery stock (heirloom tomatoes, disease-resistant beefsteaks, sweet red cherry tomatoes, Sungolds, San Marzanos, Romas, assorted peppers, and eggplant), potted herbs and specialty cukes, and Singer Farm Naturals tart cherry juice.

Fellenz Family Farm is bringing green garlic, leeks, Cherry Belle radishes, Scarlet Queen turnips, lettuce (green leaf, green romaine, red leaf, and red oak leaf), red Russian kale, Siberian kale, mizuna, komatsuna, hakurei turnips, and spinach, plus herb and veggie transplants. Andy’s Specialty Produce is bringing certified organic salad mix, arugula, spinach, red radishes, potatoes, onions, cilantro, sunflower shoots, and pea shoots. 

Deep Root Farm is bringing arugula, baby kale, salad turnips, salad mix, kohlrabi, and pac choi. Clearview Farm will have certified organic nettles; some rhubarb; dried dill, basil (lemon and holy-tulsi tea), and spearmint; truly free-range eggs; organically-fed 100% grass-grown Angus beef in a variety of cuts (bones, steaks, roasts, burger, liver, and more); organic buckwheat; and Genesee Valley Bean certified organic dry cannellini, black and pinto beans.

Happy Hooves Farm will have fresh small whole small chickens; eggs from free-roaming hens fed no soy, no corn, and no wheat organic feed; pork cuts including chops, steaks, roasts, ribs, sausages, and other parts from pasture-raised heritage breed pigs raised on pasture with organic feed containing no soy, no corn, and no wheat; and pasture-raised 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef including ground beef, pot roast, chuck roast, stew beef from sirloin, liver, tongue, and bare and meaty soup bones. Bolton Farms is bringing lettuce bouquets, butterhead bibb lettuce, spring mix, kale, micro greens, mustard greens, parsley, dandelion greens, and basil.

Stonecrop Farm is bringing fresh certified organic whole chickens, boneless breast, leg quarters, wings, frames, feet, and organ meats, plus pasture-raised heritage breed pork chops, shouder roasts, steaks, spare ribs, stew meat, ground pork, sausage, deli ham, ham steaks, hocks, organ meats, bones, trotters, and rendered lard. Bristol Mushrooms will have fresh picked, certified organic shiitake and lion’s mane mushrooms, Brain Booster lion’s mane coffee (now with 40% more in each package), and dried lion’s mane and Brain Booster powder in multiple sizes.

Shannon Brook Farm is bringing certified organic, pasture-raised heritage breed pork: fresh hams, no-nitrate smoked hams, ham slices, smoked hocks, ground, soup bones, minute steaks, two types of chops, six types of sausage, and five types of no-nitrate bacon; grass-fed lamb raised on organic pastures: shoulder and leg roasts, four types of chops, shanks, hot Italian and chorizo sausage, soup bones, organ meats; certified organic, free-range poultry: stew hens, whole and half broiler chickens, chicken necks, and pekin ducks; and certified organic free-range chicken eggs. East Hill Creamery is offering a special on Underpass Raclette style cheese.

Fellenz Family Farm is bringing certified organic micro greens, mesclun mix, komatsuna, mizuna, mint transplants, cilantro transplants, tomato and squash transplants, hakurei turnips, and dried herbs, plus Wild Thistle herbal products. K&S Bischoping will have a nice variety of crunchy and tasty apples, great for out of hand eating, cooking, or baking.

Lighthouse Gardens will have a large variety of certified organic herb and vegetable transplants, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, lettuces, kales, chard, Asian greens, spinach, endive, beets, onions, cole crops, cucumbers, squashes, ginger, fig plants, and more, plus succulents in pots, planters, and hanging baskets as well as perennials, strawberry hanging baskets with ripe strawberries, lettuce bowls, herb planters, berry plants, patio tomato planters, and organic potting soil. Dearhaven Farm is bringing certified organic and spray-free spinach, asparagus, red and green head lettuce, potatoes, and sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes).

Wohlschlegels Naples Maple Farm is bringing maple mustard; maple fudge; bourbon barrel aged maple syrup; maple BBQ sauce; maple cotton candy; maple coated almonds, cashews, and pecans; traditional, cinnamon, and raspberry maple cream spread; pure NYS maple syrup in flavors golden, amber, dark, and very dark; granulated maple sugar; maple garlic rub; maple coffee and tea; wheat-free oatmeal maple dog treats; soft and hard sugar shapes; and body care products: maple vanilla soap, lotion and lip balm.  Seaway Trail Honey will have all seasonal local raw honeys from spring to fall, certified Kosher; honeycomb; cute mini bears; black walnuts, almonds, pistachios in honey; infused honeys with organic lavender, ginger, rosemary, cocoa, and cinnamon; and pure beeswax candles; stop by for a sampling and for information about bees and the different types of honey. 

Tripleberry Farm will have lots of freshly-made jams including peach, plum, and grape jams, and pesticide-free traditional and reduced sugar berry jams. Lavender Moon is bringing soaps, salves, lotions, teas, culinary blends, and all natural repellents Bug Off and Tick Me Off; stop by for a complimentary cup of hibiscus cooler tea.

Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, panang, shepherds, and bbq beef brisket pot pies along with key lime, cherry cheesecake, and strawberry rhubarb tarts, cut-out cookies, and rugelach. Pasta Classics will have ravioli flavors including smoked mozzarella & asparagus from Fisher Hill Farm, Buffalo wing, and six cheese, plus a wide variety of strombolis, great for holiday picnics. 

R&M Bischoping will have lots of raw spring, summer, and fall honey; beeswax lotion bars; beeswax lip balms, including new options with eco-friendly packaging; and lots of honey and goats milk soaps, including popular lilac scented soap made in tribute to the Lilac Festival. Le Petit Poutine is offering a special — Buffalo chicken poutine, gluten free and can be prepared diary free.

Flour City Pasta is featuring hot spicy pastas made with local hot peppers. RocBucha is bringing strawberry-basil, cherry-sage, and blackberry-orange kombucha on tap, and will have bottled flavors including blueberry-mint, strawberry-basil, ginger, pineapple-ginger, and blackberry-orange.

Brian’s Kitchen is bringing cookies, traditional and gluten-free/vegan, granola bars, and chocolate fudge. JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing mom’s mac and cheese, lemonade, mixed berry cobbler, lemon blueberry cake, blackberry raspberry cake, oatmeal cranberry cookies, chocolate chip cookies, grandma’s breakfast cake, muffins (blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry), chocolate brownie muffins, peanut butter balls, chocolate dipped bourbon balls, and monster brownies.
