This Week at the Market – August 12, 2018

Communities thrive when members support each other. Vendors in our Brighton Farmers’ Market community are competitors, but they are also friends, allies, and mutual supporters. Each week we see our seasoned farmers advising rookies, vendors swapping tips and buying each others’ products, and neighboring vendors wrangling stubborn tents together. This week two of our vendors are joining forces at the Market for “Fisher Hill Farm Takeover of Marty’s Birdland.Marty’s Birdland food truck will offer fried chicken and a variety of farm-fresh vegetables, all sourced from Fisher Hill Farm — come have an all-local picnic at the Market.

Le Petit Poutine is also a big supporter of fellow vendors; this week Lizzie and Ronnie and their team are featuring Aberdeen Hill Farm sausage in sausage gravy poutine finished with fresh rosemary, cherry lime soda with cherries from Lagoner Farms, and suggest topping any poutine with an egg from Fisher Hill Farm; also featured this week is a summer favorite, sausage, onions, and peppers poutine.

Bolton Farms will have lettuce bouquets, spring mix, arugula, watercress, basil, beets, beans, sweet corn, bok choi, spicy mix, red Russian kale, Tuscan kale, curly kale, microgreens, dandelion greens, sorrel, and rappi. Growing Family Farms will have certified organic heirloom tomatoes, cherry and grape tomatoes, sweet peppers, poblanos, cubanelles, jalapenos, onions, scallions, celery, eggplant, Italian dandelion, kale, chard, romaine and red butter lettuce, raw honey, pasture-raised chicken and duck eggs, and Singer Farm Naturals tart cherry juice.

K&S Bischoping will have peaches, nectarines, and apple varieties including Pristine and heirlooms Red Astrakan and Victoria Limbertwig. Stonecrop Farm is bringing fresh certified organic whole chickens, leg quarters, boneless breast, tenders, wings, feet, backs, and organ meats, as well as pasture-raised pork chops, shoulder roasts, sausages, ground pork, smoked bacon, deli ham, hocks, and soup bones.

Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing cuts of 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, cuts of pasture-raised pork including some from American Guinea hogs, fresh young chickens from Freedom Rangers, eggs from truly free-ranging hens, and fresh raw spring honey; all meats and eggs are raised without soy, corn, or wheat and are certified organic. Lagoner Farms will have lots of Rising Star and early Red Haven peaches, blueberries, white peaches, nectarines, donut peaches, red and yellow plums, apricots, tart cherries, and a few raspberries.

Deep Root Farm is bringing  salad mix, mesclun, arugula, baby kale, tri-color beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, hot peppers, carrots, and garlic. Shannon Brook Farm is featuring heritage breed, pasture-raised pork minute steaks to make pork Philly cheese steak sandwiches with this recipe.

Shady Lane Farm is bringing Yukon gold potatoes, red micro-cabbages, yellow Romano beans, heirloom cucumbers, Swiss chard, red beets, garlic, sweet corn, fresh-cut basil, mint, parsley, and lots of colorful flower bouquets. Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce will have certified organic vine-ripe slicing tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, salad mix, carrots, baby kale, lettuce (red leaf, green leaf, and romaine), fresh onions, red beets, green summer cabbage, radishes, pea and sunflower shoots, red radishes, turnips, and garlic.

Lighthouse Gardens will have organic cherry and saladette tomatoes, sweet peppers, eggplant, summer squash and striped zucchini, celery, lettuce bouquets, baby salad greens, five different kinds of radishes, hakurei turnips, rainbow Swiss chard, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, herb and vegetable transplants, succulents in pots and hanging baskets, perennials, hostas, herb planters, berry plants, and organic potting soil. Tripleberry Farm is bringing lots of pesticide-free blueberries and blackberries, plus jams and goat milk soaps.

Clearview Farm is bringing certified organic garlic, dried and fresh catnip for your favorite feline, spearmint, eggs, dry black beans, buckwheat, and organically-fed 100% grass-grown Black Angus beef, including steaks, roasts, ground beef, and other assorted cuts. Chicory Blue Gardens will have sunflowers, zinnias, and the first colorful gladiolus from the fields.

Bristol Mushrooms will have freshly-picked, certified organic king oyster and lion’s mane mushrooms. Dearhaven Farm is bringing certified organic spray-free peaches, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, winter squash (acorn, delicata, spaghetti), snap beans, cabbage, cukes, zucchini, garlic sweet red onion (Tropea long), potatoes, sweet red pepper, hot pepper, kale, basil and fresh herbs, and assorted head lettuce.

JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing lemonade, mom’s mac and cheese, decadent pecan brownies, peach cobbler, carrot cake, grandma’s breakfast cake, chocolate brownie muffins, blueberry and blueberry raspberry muffins, peanut butter balls, bourbon balls, and three layer lemon blueberry raspberry cake.

Seaway Trail Honey is bringing raw, pure, local summer honey — a pale, amber honey harvested Friday evening, freshly harvested early summer honey — a light sweet honey from basswood/linden blossoms and other wildflowers, spring to fall seasonal honeys and honeycomb, cute mini bears, certified Kosher, nuts in honey, infused honeys, pure beeswax, and candles, all from the small scale, small batch apiary near Pultneyville by Lake Ontario; see live bees in an observation hive for the non-profit NY Bee Wellness.

Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing barrel aged maple syrup; maple BBQ sauce; maple cotton candy; maple coated almonds, cashews, and pecans; traditional, cinnamon, and raspberry maple cream spread; maple mustard; pure NYS maple syrup in golden, amber, dark, and very dark; granulated maple sugar; maple garlic rub; maple coffee and tea; wheat free oatmeal maple dog treats; soft and hard sugar shapes; and body care products — maple vanilla soap, lotion, and lip balm.

RocBucha is bringing kombucha on tap in watermelon, blueberry-mint, cherry-sage, and peach-cardamom; in bottles will be strawberry-basil, ginger, blueberry-mint, and pineapple-ginger (Heidi is happy to refill any clean, glass bottle, doesn’t have to be RocBucha’s). Lavender Moon will have all-natural Bug Off and Tick Me Off repellents plus Anti-Itch spray, herbal soaps, lotions, salves, and sugar scrubs; Joe will offer free samples of hibiscus cooler tea.

Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, veggie, shepherds, panang, and chicken and biscuit pot pies along with cherry, raspberry, and triple berry pies and cut out cookies. Brian’s Kitchen is bringing almond and coconut granola bars, peanut and chocolate chip granola bars, chocolate fudge, cookies, and reusable bags.

Impact Earth is offering a food waste and compostible wares hauling service at the Market; pick up a bucket and pay a deposit, return your filled bucket next week, and pick up a clean new bucket. Thanks to Impact Earth for collecting trash and recycling at the Market each week to promote our efforts to be a zero-waste Market.
