Artichokes at the Market

This Week at the Market – July 23, 2017

We have adventurous, creative farmers at Brighton Farmers’ Market, such as James and Hayley of Buzz’s Garden and Jeremiah and Ellie of Squash Blossom Farm — both farms are bringing tender young artichokes to Brighton Farmers’ Market this year. Who knew you could grow artichokes in upstate New York? Buzz’s Garden will also have heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, colorful lettuce baskets, green onions, bok choi, Swiss chard, parsley, dill, basil, cilantro, summer squash, green cabbage, napa cabbage, garlic scapes, garlic, and escarole.

Stonecrop Farm is featuring the final batch of fresh certified organic turkey parts until Thanksgiving, certified organic eggs, whole chickens and parts including boneless breast, leg quarters, wings, backs, and organ meats, as well as a full selection of pasture raised pork cuts. Fellenz Family Farm is bringing certified organic fresh onions, garlic, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce, salad mix, summer sqush, arugula, fresh herbs, peppers, and eggplant, plus Wild Thistle Herbal products.

K&S Bischoping will have peaches, black raspberries, gooseberries, and blueberries. Andy’s Specialty Garlic & Produce is bringing certified organic vine ripe tomatoes, carrots, spinach, beets, radishes, turnips, salad mix, arugula, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, green peppers, sweet onions, yellow snap beans, fresh garlic, green cabbage, baby kale, and pea shoots.

Bolton Farms will have arugula, watercress, sorrel, Tuscan kale, curly kale, Red Russian kale, Boston bibb lettuce, spring, mix, lettuce bouquets, large bunches of Genovese basil, and mustard greens. Growing Family Farms will have a large variety of organic tomatoes including Pink Berkeley tie dyes and Sunrise Bumble Bee artisan cherries, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, Japanese slicing and pickling cucumbers, cauliflower, rainbow chard, sunnies, salad greens, head lettuce, fresh garlic, Hawaiian ginger and mango turmeric plants, and Singer Farm Naturals tart cherry juice.

Happy Hooves Organic Farm is bringing steaks from 100% grass fed and grass finished beef; organic pork from pasture raised pigs fed no corn or soy; organic free-ranging soy-free and corn-free chickens (sale on whole fresh chickens); cut up chickens; chicken parts; organic eggs from free roaming soy-free and corn-free hens; farmstead soaps, candles and jams from organic ingredients from the farm; and gluten-free muffins. Dearhaven Farm will have certified organic fennel, celery, head lettuce, sweet Walla Walla onions, fresh hardneck garlic, cherry tomatoes, new Adirondack Red potatoes, yellow and Ronde de Nice summer squash, carrots, beets, cabbage, basil, and parsley.

Shady Lane Farm is bringing lots of sugar snap peas, torpedo onions, scallions, snow peas, red mini-cabbages, kohlrabi, broccoli, fennel, purple basil and chives, jostaberries, and fresh-cut flower bouquets. R&M Bischoping will have green beans, zucchini, pretty purple and pink zinnia bouquets, honey, beeswax lip balms, and handmade soaps.

Chicory Blue Gardens will have summery bouquets with fresh flowers and blue echinops. Seaway Trail Honey is bringing fresh, raw, very sweet early summer (harvested Friday) and other seasonal award-winning honeycomb and honey, from spring to fall pure wildflower varieties, harvested from the bees by the shore of Lake Ontario and certified Kosher, plus live honey bees for the non-profit NY Bee Wellness, Inc. educational display.

Flowerwell is bringing summer bouquets filled with colorful blooms such as Bells of Ireland, snaps, delphinium, nicotiana, rudbeckia, and more. Bristol Mushrooms will have certified organic lion’s mane mushrooms, freshly picked.

Tripleberry Farm is bringing lots of freshly-picked, pesticide-free blueberries and raspberries, berry jams, and goat milk soaps. Lighthouse Gardens will have organic cherry tomatoes, red and orange sweet peppers, striped zucchini, radishes, rainbow Swiss chard, baby kale, lettuce bouquets, lettuce mix, garlic scapes, fresh garlic, certified organic herb and vegetable plants for late summer and fall harvest, succulents in pots and hanging baskets, perennials, lettuce bowls, herb planters, berry plants, and patio tomato plants.

Honeybee Happy & Healthy Herbs will have sungold cherry tomatoes, shelling peas, jalapeno and cayenne hot peppers, rainbow radishes, fresh basil, catnip, chives, cilantro, dill, flat-leaf parsley, French tarragon, oregano, peppermint, rosemary, spearmint, and thyme, along with frozen pizza crusts and soft pretzels. Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm is bringing maple mustard, new cinnamon maple cream spread, maple cotton candy, pure NYS maple syrup (golden, amber, dark, very dark), maple cream spread, granulated maple sugar, maple garlic rub, maple coffee and tea, wheat free oatmeal maple dog treats, soft and hard sugar shapes, and body care products — maple vanilla soap, lotion, and lip balm.

Le Petit Poutine is featuring cherry lime soda, with cherries from Lagoner Farms, and sausage gravy poutine. Marty’s Meats will have egg sandwiches (Fisher Hill Farm eggs) with brisket, chorizo, or veggies, plus early lunch sandwiches including Maine style lobster roll, lamb burger, and char sui duck legs.

Lavender Moon is bringing all natural Bug Off and Tick Me Off repellents, poison ivy relief anti itch spray, soaps, salves, lotions, and culinary blends, and will offer free sample cups of hibiscus iced tea. Flour City Pasta will have small ridge shell cucumber gnocchetti, with cukes from Growing Family Farm and Buzz’s Garden, and will offer a serving suggestion that includes fresh blueberries.

Small World Food is bringing country multigrain, sourdough rye, pain au levain, and a new sliced sandwich loaf — caraway rye. Newbury Park Pastries will have chicken, panang, veggie, and shepherds pot pies along with sweet pies, tarts, and galettes made with local ingredients.

JonJohn’s Bakery is bringing ice cold lemonade, Mom’s mac & cheese, barbecue pork chops, baked chicken, muffins (blueberry, mixed berry, brownie, and chocolate chip), classic carrot cake, lemon blueberry cake, double decker lemon blueberry raspberry cake, banana bread, star cakes, blueberry peach pie, raspberry pie, triple decker peanut butter chocolate ganache cake, grandma’s breakfast cake, chocolate chip and oatmeal cranberry cookies, chocolate peanut butter balls, and dark chocolate bourbon balls. Eat Me Ice Cream will have dairy bars (chocolate cherry, lavender, s’mores, fudge bar, and vanilla rose dip), non-dairy bars (lavender and cherry), dairy pints (chocolate cherry bomb, sour cherry, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, currant), and non-dairy pints (sour cherry, chocolate, vanilla, lavender, and secret flavors).
